CAN TV Episode 10! Featuring Dr. Carmen I. Ayala, former Illinois State Superintendent

On this CAN-TV episode, host Brenda Dixon is joined by Dr. Carmen I. Ayala, former superintendent for the Illinois State Board of Education with over 40 years of experience ineducation. Dr. Ayala discusses her story of coming from Logan Square and dealing with living in a predominantly white community, to what got her into education and wanting to become a teacher, to her journey as a trailblazer in administration.

In her last role as State Superintendent, Dr. Ayala was faced with the challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic that created more division at all levels. Despite this, she marched forward and took her learnings from her work in districts to push for more equity in schools via the Equity Journey Continuum available on state report cards as an informational tool to help hold schools accountable and close gaps in student achievements. 

Dr. Ayala also shares her advice for parents both during the school year and during the summer. During the school year, she says, it’s critical to meet with teachers and advocate for your children. During the summer she encourages parents to keep children active, monitor screen time, and encourage reading!
