Two new plans outline future improvements along Major Taylor Trail

Housing, business, tourism and other potential for the South Side communities all around the Major Taylor Trail are all considered in a new Major Taylor Land Use Framework Plan created by the Chicago Department of Planning and Development (DPD).

A draft of the Major Taylor Trail Consolidation Plan was also released. This plan is a companion to the Land Use Framework Plan and aims to clarify the strategies, responsible parties, and steps needed to help the trail meet its potential as a South Side community asset and regional attraction.

Our partners at the Trust for Public Land in their Illinois office led the Consolidation Plan effort with participation from Major Taylor Trail Keepers, Friends of the Major Taylor Trail and the public entities that have jurisdiction over the trail — including the City of Chicago departments of Planning & Development and Transportation and Chicago Park District, plus Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways and Forest Preserves District of Cook County.

The two plans will be presented to the Chicago Plan Commission for adoption later this summer. Here are links to several planning documents :

We are proud to be among the grassroots partners contributing to this historic effort, along with others in the ara such as Far South Community Development Corporation and Ald. Ronnie Mosley’s office.
