Holding Space Sculpture & Natural Area Restoration Ribbon Cutting Celebration
All are welcome to join us and trail neighbors for a ribbon cutting to celebrate a new temporary art installation and the completion of the natural area restoration!
When: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 6 from
Where: 111th Street and the Trail (just east of Aberdeen Ave)
We’ll cut the ribbon on the temporary art installation Holding Space by Chicago-based artist Nnenna Okore. Speakers will also share more about the half-mile natural area restoration that Trust for Public Land, Chicago Park District and Major Taylor Trail Keepers recently completed from 111th to 115th.
Plus, there will be an opportunity to make some art of your own and enjoy light refreshments with the trail’s neighbors. More details will be posted on social media as the date approaches. Hope to see you there!
On the north side of 111th St, we will unveil Nnenna Okore’s sculpture, Holding Space, a canopy-like steel structure with Ankara fabric that helps create a welcoming space to gather with neighbors. Just south of 111th St, we will celebrate the half-mile natural area restoration completed in partnership with the Chicago Park District to replace weedy and invasive vegetation with healthier plantings.
The photo below is a model of the sculpture itself as well as, inset, some of the cloth that will be part of the installation and a photo of Nnena and her collaborator on fabrication and installation of the piece, Omar Magana.
