City shares new Major Taylor Trail Land Use Framework Plan

Billboard about Major Taylor Trail and cover of new land use report

Housing, business, tourism and other potential for the South Side communities all around the Major Taylor Trail are all considered in a new Major Taylor Land Use Framework Plan created by the Chicago Department of Planning and Development (DPD).

Currently in draft form pending approval by the Chicago Plan Commission, the plan draws on previous studies and new research in order to make a case for equitable development in the communities along the trail, especially the area between 105th and 124th Streets. Some highlights of the plan’s recommendation include:

  • There’s huge pent up demand for groceries and restaurants in the ara- nearly $30 million in potential revenues for new businesses
  • The area has a higher number of homeowners than Chicago’s average
  • The study also highlights opportunities for business and for equitable transit oriented development, especially with a new PACE bus planned for Halsted Street and the planned Red Line Extension nearby.
  • The plan also notes opportunities for international tourism celebrating Major Taylor as the first worldwide African American sports champion.

We are proud to be among the grassroots partners contributing to this historic effort, along with others in the ara such as Far South Community Development Corporation and Ald. Ronnie Mosley’s office.
